Hello Everyone

I am wanting to set up a non profit organisation for domestic violence in rural areas. Could i have feedback if you think this is a good idea. I would like to provide advice and signpost women to the right agencies, also i would like to fund raise too.

Hi Amelia,

Wow that sounds amazing, I am sure there is need for that everywhere in the world. It sounds very sensible with setting up an advice and referral centre, these are often very successful and very helpful for the women too. You could also, as you move ahead and work with a lot of women at your organisation, begin to do advocacy and compile reports for police and local governments in order to highlight issues about domestic violence. In terms of fundraising, in my experience, local fundraising (i.e. approaching local companies and private individuals) for domestic violence is very easy. It is easy to 'sell' (sorry that sounds really morbid, but lack of better words!) as it is something that everyone can 'relate to' in one way or the other and it is very tangible (i.e. most people have a sister, a daughter, a mother, etc. and they certainly do not want them to be exposed to domestic violence). Which country are you planning to do this in?

Good luck with it, it would be interesting to hear how it goes! Do you have a homepage where I can follow you?

Best wishes,

Mette

Hi Amelia,

we posted your question to our Twitter feed and got one response so far from @floewerby who said:

"she should contact her rural community council who can help get the message out into rural areas".

Also, it might be worth you contacting Rural Yorkshire if you haven't come across them already.

Hi Amelia,

another response on Twitter from @RuthEWillis who says:

"Contact Impact Housing in Cumbria who run all the DV services in Cumbria now. Happy for you to tweet me privately."
