KnowHow NonProfit newsletter

KnowHow newsletter 10/5/10

Here's our latest enewsletter again - this time without the mischievous bit of code that got in the way of the last one. Sorry about that!

Dear friend of KnowHow,

Change is the theme this week. With the elections come and gone, things in our sector are going to be very different however we look at it. Below you’ll find sector experts talking about changes to the funding environment. There’s more Millcaster Tales, where one charity is reeling from changes to their income. And, to top it all, there are design changes to our site – positive ones we hope - which we invite you to comment on.

Recession is good for us

“I’m quite looking forward to a bit of market contraction. I think it’s been too easy to set up a social enterprise. I think there’s been too much money and too much replication.” - Jonathan Jenkins, Director of Ventures, UnLtd

This is the kind of challenging opinion shared by 10 third sector experts during the latest round table debate held by Unity Trust Bank and KnowHow NonProfit. Others argued that charities need to become more business-like, fundraisers need to be more assertive with donors, and social enterprise is already yesterday’s big idea.

Charity Talks are back

After a bit of a break, the HSBC-sponsored Charity Talks have returned to Cass Business School. John Barrick of the Stroke Association spoke candidly about how he transformed the Stroke Association into a top 100-ranked charity using the ‘servant leadership’ management approach.

As usual, a leading consultant from the Cass Centre for Charity Effectiveness gave a response. This time Andrew Forrest spoke about the evolution of leadership themes over the last 20 years and how non profit leaders must now pick and choose the style that suits them best.

Millcaster Tales: Broken Biscuits (part two)

The second animated instalment of the classic Millcaster tale ‘Broken Biscuits’ is out now. Catch up with the troubles at Millcaster Aid to Africa, where the repercussions of Jocelyn’s rude remark to a key sponsor’s wife have led to job cuts.

The wise words of Bob Dylan, which certainly apply to KnowHow NonProfit these days. The site has an improved layout and navigation plus new illustrations to give a fresh look and feel. Here's an example:
