It is essential that non profit board members understand and adapt to the strategic context.

Formulating appropriate strategy

The board needs to understand the context in which the organisation operates in order to formulate appropriate strategy, and to be sure that the organisation is adapting to changing circumstances. In particular it needs to understand the political, economic, social and technological context.

Other players in the field

It should also be aware of what other organisations in the field are doing. It may be that some of your beneficiaries’ needs are better met by another organisation. It may be time for you to adapt your service or to stop providing it altogether. If other organisations have entered your field it's worth asking whether the needs of your beneficiaries are better met by your organisations collaborating or merging.

You can find out more about involving users, understanding the external environment  and other player analysis in our Strategy section. Another good resource for understanding trends that may affect your charity or not for profit is NCVO’s Third Sector Foresight website.
