Ron's first two days as volunteer coordinator at Mill Cat Trust didn't exactly go according to plan. What did he do wrong and how should he develop his role over the next few weeks?

Have you had similar experience of managing volunteers? What problems did you have and how did you resolve them?

Missed this episode of Millcaster Tales? Read the managing volunteers at Mill Cat Trust story.

Clearly there was a great gap between Ron being recruited and starting in his new role. Luckily Ron seems to learns fast - thank goodness! How Ron develops in his new role will depend on the support and leadership he is given by Chris and others in the Trust. He is likely to need support in making the shift from running a department in a local authority to working in a charity - a very different culture. I appreciate he is or has been a Trustee but it is different. Taking the time now to ensure Ron can manage the volunteers effectively will be a good use of Chris' time. There are courses on managing volunteers and the Trust should pay. Then Ron's confidence will grow along with his skills and everyone will benefit - especially the cats with all that stroking.
