The better you understand external drivers, the more likely you are to make the right strategic decisions for your non profit.

Trends and forces from the outside world

The extent to which you can deliver your mission will depend upon trends and forces from the outside world. There are resources that will help you find out more about these forces, then plan how your organisation can work with them to greatest effect.

When thinking about external drivers, don't just consider how they will impact you and your organisation, but also ponder how they might affect your beneficiaries, your funders and other players in your field of operation. How will these important stakeholders be impacted by external drivers, how will it affect needs and services, and what will this changing external context mean to all of you?

Steps to making sense of your external environment

The first step is to understand why you need to find out about the external environment, and the value and benefits of making time to collect the information and analyse it.

You can then look at the most popular and effective tool for external environment: Political, Economic, Social, Technological (PEST) factors in the external environment.
