Is it worthwhile paying to attend a volunteer management course to learn all the legal sides of volunteering when setting up a scheme?

Are all the courses worth the money or is a particular few courses best value for money?

They can be a mixed bag, and can cost a lot of money. Look out for ones that are linked to the National Occupational Standards for Volunteer Managers (these could be accredited) or Investing in Volunteers standards - as these will be working from a recognised good practice framework.

Your local Volunteer CEntre might well run free or cheap courses, or know of people who do - and might also run a Voluntter Managers' forum, which can be good for networking. You will often find Volunteer Managers training courses mentioned on the Association of Volunteer Managers website or the UKVPMs Yahoo group (both should be findable through a search engine) - recommnedations on these can be useful as they will come from other Volunteer Managers.

Hope that helps

Hi Chris....i would love to have a Volunteer Management Course in Kenya...its quite hard and i doubt even if they are there...are there any suggestions on what i could do get it online or are there resources that could be of assitance that i could get.The other problem is that getting them on the internet is another issue...just to be able to write you this message and then send it costs me 100ksh and then downloading and the distance i take to get to a Cybercafe is 5 hours from the nearest town where i am a volunteer right now!I do hope that you can provide some info that i can use the next time i am here even if its just some advice,

Thanks,

Mo!

Hi Mokoth

There is an online course at Roehampton University here is the link

http://www.wfac.org.uk/training/online-learning-course.html

The course starts in October 2010 and lasts 7/9 months. It costs £900 and to receive the full accredation you have to complete a project based on your current work in wolunteering.

I hope this helps

Jo

Oh and there is also this course at the open university.

That charges around £700 for the online fee per course listed here:

The forum looks great but if people could give positive comments on questions or topics that would benefit volunteer mangers, that can be very helpful.

Hello

I'm a Development Worker for a project Experts in Volunteering, and we have a section on our website where you can browse training opportunities across London: http://www.expertsinvolunteering.org.uk/browse_training.php. Our project focuses specifically on good practice in Volunteer Management, so hopefully you will find some useful links.
