Low-cost ideas for personal development

There are many free or cost effective ways of learning and developing yourself at work. Here are some examples:

  • being coached or mentored
  • advice from others
  • work shadowing (inside or outside your organisation)
  • e-learning such as the courses in KnowHow's study zone
  • internal knowledge sharing events
  • job rotation
  • new assignments and work experience
  • reading books, articles, watching DVDs
  • learning from others who have specialist knowledge
  • starting a peer learning or action learning group.

Reflecting on learning

Reflecting after you have completed a piece of work or activity can be a great way of developing yourself. Think about:

  • what went well and not so well
  • the reasons behind this
  • what you might do differently next time
  • what you learnt from the experience
  • the changes you need to make as a result.

You can do this on your own or with others who were part of the project or activity.

Key to ensuring that you retain that new knowledge or skill is to apply it when you get back to work or tell others about it.

The key to learning most effectively is understanding your learning style.
