As one of the people involved in building the new homepage, it would be great to hear some feedback

I like: the photos of contributors; the 'latest on the site'; 'quick links' that change with use; 'how to use the site' being so prominent - I'd never looked at it before!; and 'why should I register' - that's really important too.  I also love the fact that you are listening to feedback and changing things in response.

I do think that the site is so much more than being about how 'to run a nonprofit'.  What you had before said more about the what and the why.  Was that what was thought of as being 'too corporate'?  All those ribbons are a bit of an overkill too (though I am fond of them as a brand) - do you really have to have them up there twice?  Very corporate!!

Great that you're listening though - sorry to be picky!

Good work, but doesn't seem to display properly in either Firefox or Chrome on Windows XP. (Looks fine in IE!)

thanks stephen - we've been fixing bugs through the day. As well as the new homepage we moved servers so there have been a couple of unexpected problems! We are Firefox users and can see the site ok so not sure what you're seeing? Please email knowhow@city.ac.uk with specific problems.

Thanks Stephen for your replies. I can't replicate your firefox problems - I suspect you have set the default size of text in your browser lower than the system default. Text only zooming does cause a few problems with the layout, but modern browsers (FF3, IE7/8, Safari) do full-page zooming by default.

I won't say you're an edge case, or that your not supported, because that simply isn't true - we're aiming to support all common browsers (IE6+, FF2+, Safari, Opera, Chrome). I say this as an explanation of why we have built the page as we have, not as an excuse for why it doesn't work in your setup (although it does sound very much like one)

I was able to replicate some problems in Chrome, but they seemed to fix themselves as the caching sorted itself out.

Let me know if I'm wrong about the text size.

it's been a couple of months, how do people think the homepage is settling in?

Over the next month or so we'll be taking stock of the site design (and functions) and making some improvements. We have a list, but it's our list, not yours, so reflects our concerns, not your wishes or thoughts. Help us make this an easier and more useful place by sharing your thoughts on design, usability and the kind of information that we offer - do it here or send a note through the 'Contact us' facility on the bottom of each page.

- Mark Barratt (site design & technology team)

We've just launched a slightly tweaked homepage - what do you think? Here's what's changed:

  • added a Twitter feed so you can see what's being talked about
  • increased the list of what's new and connected this more clearly to contributors
  • made the link to the 'find a job page' clearer
  • moved the advertising banner above the navigation
  • added a welcome to our newest member
  • changed the font of the headings

We'd love to hear your feedback. Please share it here or email knowhow@city.ac.uk
