Finding information

The grey horizontal bar along the top of every page lists all the entrances into specific subjects you might be interested in. These seven sections are quite broad. Each of these sections contains subsections which contain more details about their specific topic. So, for example the you and your team section has four subsections (managing staff, managing volunteers, building teams and self development).

The subsections can be reached by clicking on the headings in the left-hand column (section contents). This is illustrated in the image below where the left-hand column has been highlighted.

The sitemap contains a complete list of all the sections on the site.

Links

Whenever you see a word highlighted in blue and underlined this is a ‘link’ to another page. It means that you can click on it and a new page will appear with more information on that particular subject. It's easy to tell if clicking on a word will work because the cursor arrow turns into a pointing finger. To get back to where you were, you just click on the left facing arrow top left (the web browser’s ‘go back’ button) and that brings you back to the previous page.

Moving around

Because we do not want to duplicate good stuff other people have written on running nonprofits on different websites, when you click on some of the words in bold you will go through to a different website which we believe is safe and useful. This may not always be obvious but you can tell you have left our site because every one of our pages has our logo on it. You can also tell by looking at the website ‘address’ that will be showing at the top of your web browser ‘window’.  Provided you haven’t read too many pages on the new site the easiest way back is to use the ’go back’ button.

If you are still in our site, whatever page you reach you can tell where you are by looking at the string of words and arrows across the top of the page. This is called a breadcrumb trail. This is found underneath the dark grey horizontal bar. The title of the page you are on will appear as the last page in the string. You can click on any word in the arrow string to go back up several levels to the ‘top’ of that section of information.

You can get back to the homepage at any point by clicking on 'home' in the breadcrumb trail or by clicking on the KnowHow NonProfit logo.

Search tips

The search box is on every page in the top right-hand corner.

Use keywords - the search won't work well using natural language (eg 'how can I find out about setting up a charity?'), keywords (eg 'setting up a charity') will find better results.

Discussions

Use the site to talk with other people, ask questions, share your experiences. All discussions happen in forums. Each section has its own forum. These appear in the right-hand column.

To join a discussion or add a comment to a page you will need to register on the site or log-in if you have already registered.

Using your web browser

If you are using the Internet Explorer web browser, The horizontal arrows set in the blue circles, top left of your ‘browsing’ window  are one of the most useful tools. These are ‘go back a page’ and ‘go forward a page’ buttons. Clicking the one going left will take you back one page to where you were before. Then clicking the right pointing one will bring you forward again to where you were.
